About GATE Exam

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national level examination which is conducted every year. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) jointly administer the conduct of GATE. The operations related to GATE in each of the 8 zones are managed by a Zonal GATE Office at IISc. or IITs. The Organizing Institute is responsible for the end-to-end process and coordination among the administering Institutes. The Organizing Institute for GATE 2017 is IIT Roorkee. The main reason of conducting this examination is to test the aptitude and subject knowledge of the applicant and on the basis of that; they get admission in Engineering Post Graduate(PG) programmes. And also some PSUs consider GATE exam score for giving jobs for the GATE rankers in their companies. IIT Rookee will give the notification for GATE 2017 exam in August 2016. Generally examination will be conducted from last week of January and first week of February. GATE qualified students are eligible for stipend of Rs. 12400/- per month on admission.

The GATE Exam application fees
  • For Gen and OBC Male candidates is Rs. 1500/-
  • For Women candidates is Rs. 750/-
  • For SC/ST/PD candidates is Rs. 750/-

Eligibility Criteria

For Int. M.E. or M.Tech or Dual Degree 
Candidates must have completed Integrated Master’s degree program in Engineering or Technology. Candidates who are pursuing the final year can also apply.
For B.Sc. (Research) or B.S.
Candidates must have completed graduation in B.Sc (research). Candidates who are pursuing the final year can also apply.
For M.Sc. or M.A. or MCA
Candidates must have completed the Master’s degree in any branch of Science or Mathematics or Statistics or Computer Applications. Candidates who are pursuing the final year can also apply.
For Int. M.Sc or Int. B.S.-M.S
Candidates must have completed Integrated M.Sc. Candidates who are pursuing the final year can also apply.
For B.E. or B.Tech. or B.Pharm.
Candidates must have completed graduation in Engineering or Technology. Candidates who are pursuing the final year can also apply.
For B. Arch.
Candidates must have done graduation in Architecture. Candidates who are purusuing the final year can also apply.
For Int. M.E or M.Tech (Post-B.Sc.)
Candidates must have completed BSc Integrated Master’s degree programs in Engineering or Technology. Candidates who are pursuing the final year can also apply.

GATE 2017 Application Form

GATE 2017 Official notification will be available in the month of August 2017, after organizing institute (IIT Roorkee is Organising Institute for GATE 2017) will open the GATE 2017 GOAPS in the month of September 2017. Through this GOAPS website interested candidate can apply for GATE 2017 Exam.

How to Apply

Go to the official site of any of IITs. Apply for it from there only (after release of official notification for GATE 2017). Fill the basic details and after that upload the scanned photograph, signature and other mandatory details. After this section, you need to clear the payment section which you can do via net banking, credit/debit card, e-challan. And at the end don't forget to check the status of application.

GATE Exam Features

  • Examinations for all the 23 papers will be conducted by an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT). The online examination paper will contain some questions for which numerical answers must be keyed in by the candidate using the virtual keypad. Rest of the questions shall be of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type.
  • GATE examinations will be held during forenoon and afternoon sessions on alternate weekends (Saturday and Sunday) between January 2017 and February 2017. Examination for some of the papers in GATE 2017 will be held in multiple sessions. Exact details regarding complete examination schedule will be notified at a later date.
  • For GATE 2017 the entire process of filling up of application form, uploading of certificates/ documents, etc., will be online and the candidates need not send any hard copy of their application form/ documents, etc., to any of the IIT/IISc zonal GATE office.
  • The payment of application fees would be online through different modes like net banking, debit/ credit card, e-challan, etc.
  • The admit cards for GATE 2017 would be available through the online process only. Candidates can download their admit card from GATE 2017 website. No hard copy of admit cards will be posted to the candidates.
  • GATE 2017 score is valid for 3 yrs from the date of announcement of the results.

GATE 2017 Result

The result for the GATE 2017 Exam will be uploaded in the official website of GATE 2017. You can check out their result from 2nd or 3rd week of March 2017.

Examination Pattern

The examination will be conducted online.
There will be total of 65 questions in the GATE Exam.
The examination is for 100 marks.
55 questions will be based on the core subjects and engineering mathematics. 
These 55 questions will be carrying 85 marks.
And rest 10 questions  are from General Aptitude(GA) will be of total 15 marks. These 15 marks are common for all GATE papers.
Questions in GATE Exams can be
  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) type questions. These type of questions will be of 1 or 2 marks. Each question will have four options and out of them you have to choose the correct answer. Negative marking is there for MCQ type questions. 1/3 marks negative for wrong answer for 1 mark question and 2/3 marks for the wrong answer for the 2 marks questions. If you left the question without answering then there will be no negative or positive marks for that questions.
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions. These types of questions will be of 1 or 2 marks. Candidates need to answer by using the virtual keypad. Answers for these questions are real numbers. There is no negative marking for this type of questions.
